ь During the first half of 2010, on the domestic foreign exchange market there was the tendency for USD strengthening against KGS due to considerable excess of demand over supply of foreign currency. As in the previous years, demand for foreign currency was formed under the influence of necessity in payment for import of gas, fuels-and-lubricants as well as for other imported goods. Herewith, inflow of foreign currency to the republic considerably decreased due to closure of borders with neighboring countries and internal situation in the republic. All these factors put considerable pressure on KGS exchange rate, acute fluctuations of which were smoothed by transactions of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic. Thus in the first half of 2010, net sale of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic in the inter-bank foreign currency market constituted 140.15 million US dollars. Within the same period, official rate of USD increased by 2 soms 30 tiyin, from 44.0917 to 46.3896 KGS/USD. In the reporting period, rate of USD strengthening considerably decreased and constituted 5.21 percent in comparison with the corresponding period of 2009 (strengthening rate – 9.80 percent).
Growth of USD rate was also registered in the world financial markets: in the first half of 2010, USD showed high positions against the majority of foreign currencies. For instance, in the first half of 2010, American currency strengthened by 18.68 percent against EUR. The following tendency was observed for dynamics of the USD exchange rate against national currencies in the main trade partners of the Kyrgyz Republic, including Russia and Kazakhstan: Russia – devaluation of RUB constituted 5.61 percent; Kazakhstan – KZT strengthening constituted 0.68 percent.
National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic monitors the situation in financial markets and accepts corresponding measures for the purpose of stable situation provision in the domestic financial market.
ь Officials of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic transferred 246 thousand soms to the Support fund for people, suffered in the south of the republic.
